Sustainable agriculture and a comparison of farming systems in Italy

A short, intensive, high-quality programme.

The theme of the NGSE programme was ‘Sustainable agriculture and a comparison of farming systems’ – The activities took place in District 2050 and, in particular, in the province of Cremona. Visits were made to both traditional and organic farms, comparing farming practices between Italy and Brazil – the tutor for the visits was a certified technical expert in organic farming – a visit was also made to the cloning research centre (Avantea CR) and to the University of Pavia’s developmental biology laboratory, where another student from Brazil was undertaking her NGSE. Of particular note was the requirement to attend an intensive Italian language course to bridge language gaps and familiarise herself with aspects of university life. The two host families were both involved in the RYE exchange programme, which has consistently proved to be an excellent resource, not least due to their proven track record of hospitality.

Participation in the host club’s activities took the form of attending the club’s service events and social gatherings, and an official presentation was given to the club and the District. Isabella, as a Rotaractian and a Rotarian, lived out this experience in accordance with Rotary’s ideals and principles, whilst also fostering dialogue and relationships with the local Rotaract club and making herself available to ensure the success of a new exchange with Brazil for a young woman from District 2050.
